First-ever healthcare keynote at CES, introduced by Laurence Fishburne.

In 2022, CES, the most influential tech event in the world, celebrated yet another first. Abbott Labs was the first healthcare tech company invited to deliver a keynote address. Abbott is known for the FreeStyle Libre which has revolutionized Diabetes management; the Infinity DBS which has the power to reverse Parkinson’s tremors; and the Piccolo, which has saved thousands of premature babies’ lives, among many other innovations. I was tasked with creating the “powerful opening,” as it came to be called. Little did I know in the beginning that the incomparable Laurence Fishburne would deliver those words, and tee up a riveting keynote address.

I disagree. Because you just did.

Copy is what sells. Whether it’s aspirational, informative, persuasive, and/or seductive, well-crafted copy is what turns the casual consumer into a driven buyer. And unless we make an unexpected return to hieroglyphics, words are here to stay.

Words and puzzles are two of the things I love most in this world. And that’s why I love being a copywriter; because every creative brief is a puzzle I get to solve with words. Havas Baltimore was the digital arm of the Havas network. With my CD in the Chicago office, I was responsible for managing our team of about half a dozen and leading the department while remaining in regular contact with the team in Chicago. I got incredible “big brand” experience with Havas and learned a tremendous amount about managing teams and the various personalities that come with them. Also learned the art of the 2:30 am re-write and the 3 am re-concept.

There was no way to know that accepting this as my first advertising job would create a seismic shift in my perspective. But when you’re working “below the line,” you have to look at things from 360 degrees. It’s a skillset I’ve taken with me through all of my jobs, always thinking in experiential terms whether it’s traditional media or bringing ides to life digitally. At BFG, I fleshed out “Catch the Captain,” a scavenger hunt that took place at music festivals around the country, wrote scripts for the Morganettes to use on-premise, and worked with VH1 for musical events for Baileys Original Irish Cream.
